Find someone in the class who can break down some steps for you. I’ve never met a hip hop dancer who didn’t want to help me learn what they do. And practice with them whenever possible.
If the teacher ever breaks down any steps and teaches how to do it such as pops or the moonwalk for example, practice what she shows you every day for a certain amount of time. Also if she does any warm up routines that involve things like body isolations, practice those on your own at home daily as well.
There are lots and lots of how to videos on youtube.com that I used for inspiration when I started doing hip hop a few years ago. Do searches for “how to pop and lock”, “how to glide”, etc.
And besides practice and practice and practice, just don’t quit!
You will alwasy feel awkward until you’ve learned the steps and feel confident about it, so just accept that you’ll look goofy while you’re learning and practicing, its ok, its part of the learning process!
If this teacher doesn’t teach you much, you will still learn by being exposed to the dances, and you might want to seek out a better teacher for your next class.
Good luck and congrats on starting to learn hip hop!!
You are never Done learning. A dancer is never done growing, you are never at your best. It’s not a matter of time, it’s a matter of dedication, and how much you want it. Even though if you get real good, you shouldnt consider yourself a pro because dance is always evolving there’s always new moves, new styles, it’s like fashion, would you be wearing your grand fathers clothes? well I hope not. It’s the same in the dance world, take for exemple, the jerk, it gets old, and you will get strange looks if you are still doing it next year you know?
So yeah, where to start. what to do, is it normal if it hurts? all of that, here:
1st – Learn to get rythm.
Listen to your songs and decorticate every instruments.
Learn where to clap your hands!
it may seem stupid but yeah, it is the first step to have rythm!
Then try dancing on the rythm of the bass of the song.
Don’t try to follow the lyrics you will seem off beat. It is easier to stick to one beat of the song and move with it, although you can follow the lyrics of the chorus. You can also add moves when there are special effects in the song!
2nd- Once you have rythm, dance will come naturally to you!
Of course, you can get inspired by dancers on youtube! Just type freestyle or choreography or whatever and there will be plenty of videos waiting for YOU!
3rd- Practice makes perfect! You can repeat your dance steps in your basement to build your confidence! Just put on a good song and improvise! Let the sound guide you!
4th- You shouldn’t be thinking while dancing, don’t worry about what others think or you will limit yourself in your movements and will look awkward.
How to choregraph? (even tho you can just freestyle)
1. I do a long list of songs.
2. I pick the one that inspires me the most.
3. I listen to it A LOT of times to decorticate every sound and instruments, know the
lyrics and know where every beat hits.
4. I DON’T USE 8 COUNTS.
5. I put on the song and I freestyle to it.
6. Then I listen to the song and visualise a choreography in my head.
7. Freestyle Again.
8. I decide when my choreo will start (I always start at the same time as the bass does)
9. I try a couple moves that matches the bass NOT THE LYRICS.
10. Instead of counting I ‘sing’. (Boom Clap Bo-boom Clap Boom Schatcks.) You must feel every beat.
11. I continue choreographing in that way.
11.5 If I’m out of idea I might ask someone or check out videos on youtube to be inspired not copy it!
12. When there are special effects or lyrics to the song that I’d like to highlight I change the tempo of my dance to follow the lyrics or the certain sound.
(I take it from the top everytime I add a couple moves, that’s the best to remember everything, you can also write it down in simple words or record yourself)
13. I review my entire choreography to see if there is something that doesn’t match the beat to fix it.
14. Practice practice practice.
Look up for tutorials on youtube there are plenty!
Hope That I helped and That it wasn’T too long.
HAve fun Dancing!

How can I become better at hip hop dance?
So I just started taking hip hop dance for beginners last week, but I find it super hard to keep up. My dance instructor just does the moves without explaining them and she expects us to keep up and memorize them. I have pretty good memory, but sometimes the moves just don’t come out right. They look awkward and unnatural. How can I look like I am actually hip hip dancing and not just moving around awkwardly?
